A7K – RAAF 6 Squadron, 1975

In 1973, as ongoing structural problems plagued the F-111C fleet, particularly critical fatigue cracks in the wing box assemblies, the Royal Australian Air Force faced a looming strike capability gap. With the F-111s grounded indefinitely and political pressure mounting, the Department of Defence sought an interim solution that could be rapidly deployed, cost-effective, and capable of fulfilling Australia’s long-range strike and close air support needs.

Enter the LTV A-7 Corsair II. Although originally designed for the U.S. Navy, the A-7 had proven itself in Vietnam with its advanced (for the time) navigation and weapons delivery systems. Its proven airframe and low maintenance demands made it an appealing stopgap.

Behind closed doors, a little-known 1974 meeting in Canberra- later dubbed the “Corsair Compromise”- resulted in the swift procurement of 28 A-7Ks under a secretive arrangement with the United States.

The two-seat A-7K was selected, as the second seat provided for a second set of eyes and a navigator. The aircraft were repainted with RAAF roundels and Mirage-style camouflage. They were based at RAAF Base Amberley, where they served in a strike role with 1 and 6 Squadrons from 1975 until 1996.
