My Red Yamaha RD350 “HZ-983” was wheeled out of the Ballarat showroom of the Yamaha dealership on Armstrong St South, on a glorious sunny day – a rarity in Ballarat in September.

The dealer handed me the keys, and gestured toward this gleaming machine – “she’s all yours, now take it easy!” – Containing my excitement, I recall my mother looking very anxious…

Around the first corner & headed for lunch at home, I ventured to feed in a bit of throttle, now in 2nd gear & remembering the initial 5000rpm “limit”.

S H I T ! ! Front wheel clawing the air & accelerating like a mad thing – off the throttle & sending the front wheel back to earth with a thud – thinking “better be a bit gentler next time”.

…..and that’s about how the story continued during my 2 years with this RD350 – lots of mad acceleration bursts, minimal wear on the front tyre, and just the occasional “brush” with the asphalt. She was an angry beast, for a novice!

This model brings back so many memories….(I did nearly kill myself, but that’s another story!)
