.: Karen Murrays 1/24 Fujimi Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 has a long and distinguised history stretching back more than 40 years. During that time over 50 different models have been sold as Porsche continues to update and develop the 911 in keeping with the times.

Unveiled at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 911's rear-mounted horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine and fastback coupe style quickly grabbed the attention of car enthusiasts around the world. The 911 Turbo debuted in 1975 as Porsche's first street model to feature a turbo engine. While retaining the 911's attractive silhouette, the Turbo also sported a huge rear wing, flared wheel arches and wide tires. A great-looking car with equally impressive abilities due to its 3 liter 260hp engine, the Turbo soon became the "flagship" of the 911 Series, though the high number of modifications such as improved suspension, clutch and 4-speed transmission led it to be initially named the 930 Turbo.

Models built after 1978 featured an engine equipped with intercooler together with upgraded capacity and output of 3.3 liters and 300hp respectively. Although BMW's 2002 Turbo was the first turbo-mounted production car, no subsequent model was built, while the 911 Turbo gave birth to a lineage that continues to this day. Production of the 911 Turbo continued until 1989, and was subsequently replaced by the new turbo-engine 964 model. However, the Turbo's legacy lived on as Porsche produced the "Turbo look" 911 with wide body and large rear wing but normal engine.

Although no longer in production, the Turbo leaves a powerful mark as a truly superior sports car, and a key member of the 911 "family" which redefined people's perception of turbo cars.
