The RFD Towed Target was developed to replace the towed target drogues that were extensively used in the piston-engine era.

In Britain, these targets were tested at speeds up to 676 km/h (365 knots) for use with jet powered fighters.

Ten of the Winged Targets were imported into Australia in the early 1950s and assigned serials A88-1 to 10.

Two were used in trials at Laverton and the remainder at East Sale but they received only limited use and never took over the role of the conventional drogues they were intended to replace.
